Lullaby and goodnight

It is past midnight and I just now finished scrubbing the kitchen floor.

I’ve been a bit of an insomniac lately and my days are all turned around.

It doesn’t help that I enjoyed a lazy Sunday and even an unintended hour-plus nap. Nowadays, I sit down and the next thing I know I’m waking up from a long winter’s nap. And then I’m good to go for hours and hours.

And so I clean.

The kitchen floor was good and dirty thanks to recent messy baking endeavors. And when I got done there, I just couldn’t stop, cleaning up in the office and then the bedroom where I found expired Kohl’s cash from October. Guess I really don’t clean that often.

Last week my wakefulness was so extreme that I trotted down to the basement at 2 a.m. to attach handles and casters to a trunk I was working on. Then I came back up to the kitchen and did the dishes and moved on to cleaning the bathroom. I finally achieved shut-eye at 4:30 a.m.

I know this isn’t the ideal way to attain a state of sleep readiness, but I am not good at just staying still and willing the Sandman to work his magic.

But enough cleaning for tonight. Jack Reacher is waiting for me. It’s not exactly sleepy time reading, but I’m anxious to see how he catches the bad guys. He’s already efficiently dispatched several low-level henchmen. Now it’s time to polish off the snipers and with that comes the hope of some shut-eye.

  1. Gee whiz! Here I thought I was the only person who sometimes wakes in the middle of night only to toss and turn — unless I am smart enough to arise and head to our study for some computer time or to a couch with my favorite book in hand. I am now rereading Tuesdays with Morrie. It’s certainly inspirational, and a crash course in how to handle adversity. Wishing you the best in your night-time trysts with work. It’s good for the soul.
